Four members of the China Democracy Party asked police yesterday for permission to hold a rally to mark the June 4 anniversary.

The application was received by officers in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, who made no indication if a rally would be allowed, the Information Centre of Human Rights and Democratic Movement in China said.

The activists, led by dissident Wang Rongqing, want to hold a public rally at a park in the city. They said more than 50 people would be expected to attend.

According to the Hong Kong-based centre, former student leader Jiang Qisheng was taken away by police on Tuesday night, apparently to stop him from organising activities to mourn those who died 10 years ago.

Separately, three of four members of the banned opposition party who were detained by police last week have been released.
