Hundreds of enthusiasts invested their time and money in an exercise of lasting value at a challenging fund-raising event.
Children and adults gathered at the Sha Tin race course to put their money on to a record- breaking effort: an attempt at creating the world's longest line of coins.
The return on their effort was inadequate in that they could not surpass the record of 55.63 kilometres set by Malaysia in 1995, but they managed to raise $1.8 million for some worthwhile causes in Hong Kong.
They were hampered by rain and chilly winds on the day and ended up with a line of coins stretching up to 33.15 kilometres.
The event was organised by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) Hong Kong and Metro Broadcast's 997 Hit Radio, and sponsored by Hang Seng Bank.
Still, it was an achievement.
