Learning to speak in public gave a group of 18 students a big confidence boost.

Tsuen Wan Public Ho Chuen Yiu Memorial College invited the City Toastmasters Training Club to help students develop their communication and leadership skills.

The programme consisted of eight two-hour sessions conducted in English.

To mark the end of the programme, a speech contest was held. All the participants had to deliver a speech in front of the adjudicators and guests.

'Before I joined this programme, I was afraid of speaking in front of the class. However, today I feel that I am confident enough to speak in front of so many parents, teachers and schoolmates,' said student Terri Wu.

Borrowing from Abraham Lincoln, fellow participant Dennis Ching said: 'This programme is of the participants, by the participants and for the participants.' Arts student Mandy Tsang said: 'I've been taught in the programme how to express my feelings through facial expressions, body movements and vocal varieties. I think these skills are very useful.' City Toastmasters Training Club is a non-profit making organisation. Members hold regular meetings and develop public speaking, communication and leadership skills.
