HONGKONG (May 25): LORD Thomson of Fleet Street revealed yesterday he intends to base his Asian publishing empire in Hongkong - probably this year. He said he would like to add the South China Morning Post to this empire, but, he added, 'it takes two people to make a deal and I don't think they are interested.' There was only room in Hongkong for one morning and one evening newspaper, he said. As far as the afternoon publications were concerned, he said based on their circulation figures he found it hard to see how they could operate and make a worthwhile profit. Speaking on The Times, which has run up losses of HK$120 million since he took it over several years ago, the newspaper baron said it was secure. 'I believe The Times is a great newspaper, and I can afford one extravagance. I believe it's someone's responsibility to carry on The Times - and I do it willingly.'
