Hong Kong will have enough water to survive for three months if the supply from Guangdong is hit by the millennium bug, officials said yesterday.

The Advisory Council on the Environment was briefed by Water Services Department officials, who say their computer system will not fail.

'They have appointed an expert to assess and co-ordinate all efforts,' chairman of the council Peter Wong Hong-yuen said yesterday.

'The rectification will be finished by June.' He said the department had 'obtained assurances' from Guangdong province that supply would not be affected. Hong Kong takes about 75 per cent of its water from Guangdong's Dongjiang River.

'The Guangdong Water Supplies Department have returned confirmation that they are Y2K compliant. It could be that they don't have any computers at all,' said Mr Wong.

'However . . . the contingency plan is that we will have water reserves full, with three months' water supply. That is the worst-case scenario,' he said.
