Size does matter. Hong Kong proved that mass and weight can undo many a smaller-made rugby team. And Taiwan were definitely in that category.
No surprise then that Hong Kong crushed the visitors 55-10 to win the inaugural home-and-away Asian Triangular Series at Football Club last night.
Hong Kong finished the competition, which included Singapore, unbeaten.
The hefty Mark Solomon and Hamish Bowden scored a brace of tries each as the SAR ran in eight tries against a young Taiwanese outfit who conceded weight and height to the 'old-timers' of Hong Kong rugby.
Coach Phil Campbell had plumped up his team with a number of players who were unavailable for the first leg in Taipei that ended in a 19-19 draw. The presence of Solomon, Roger Patterson and Stephen Kidd made a huge and telling difference.
'I expected to win by about 40 points. It was a comfortable win,' said Campbell.
The writing was on the wall from the very first scrum. The Taiwanese were pushed off their own ball. The platform for victory was put in place.
