Customers often lose out when companies enjoy a monopoly. Without the freedom of choice to go elsewhere, consumers may have to put up with second-rate service, indifferent staff and poor facilities.
The Jockey Club's Kau Sai Chau Public Golf Course bucks that trend. Despite being the only public golf course in Hong Kong, it has ensured staff training reaches the highest levels.
Its CARE Project - Customers' Appreciation; Reward for Excellence - has earned it one of the six finalists' places in the awards.
Kau Sai Chau, built on former military land and designed by golfing great Gary Player, features two 18-hole courses laid out over 140 hectares.
The North Course, framed by the South China Sea, provides an exciting round for experienced handicap players. The South Course, with its undulating fairways, is somewhat less challenging - but no less addictive for golfing enthusiasts.
Sixty driving range bays and chipping and putting facilities are also available.
