Fancy lunch for less than $20? Not instant noodles, but a delicious and nutritious hot meal chosen from a broad menu.
University canteens offer perhaps the best value for money in town and they are not restricted to students.
All the universities have a range of restaurants - invariably a couple of canteens based on a food court principle, a few snack bars or coffee shops and one or two restaurants usually reserved for faculty.
The canteens or cafeterias offer the best deals. University policy of putting campus eateries out to tender means caterers compete to offer not only the lowest prices, but also the best service. The tender system also means that caterers are often locked into a pricing policy for a two-year period, thus keeping prices down.
Given the accessibility of City University, a five-minute walk from Kowloon Tong MTR station, it is surprising more people do not venture on campus for a cheap meal. There is a common misconception that campus facilities are for registered students only - this is simply not the case for canteens and the majority of restaurants.
A tunnel from Festival Walk - and its often pricey restaurants - leads to City University. Follow the signs to City Exchange - the cafeteria is on the fifth floor. This is a sprawling affair which has been divided into functional zones such as barbecue counter, salad bar, rice counter, noodle stall and so forth. The day's specials as well as regular items are shown on a huge menu at the entrance.
