March 3: Pilots oppose pay cuts but say they are ready to negotiate.

March 15: Pilots vow to fight pay cuts of up to 27 per cent and threaten not to sign agreements which must be returned by April 9.

March 16: Cathay delivers ultimatum asking pilots to agree to the pay cuts or quit.

March 20: Pilots file a writ in the High Court against alleged work abuses.

March 28: Pilots given three more weeks to consider pay cut plan. The deadline by which pilots must decide is postponed to April 30.

April 24: Deadline further extended to May 31.

May 25: Pilots issued with a new ultimatum - accept a revised salary deal and drop in pay, retire early, or be sacked on June 11.

May 27: Pilots write to Tung Chee-hwa to appeal for help.

May 28: Pilots call in sick, forcing Cathay to cancel three flights and stop taking bookings.

May 29: Thirty flights cancelled, affecting 5,000 travellers as more pilots take sick leave, citing stress.

May 31: Cathay charters four planes and crews from rival airlines as 33 flights are cancelled.

June 1: Cathay shares slump to an eight-month low, wiping about $4 billion as investors began assessing the cost of the pilots' action. Cathay for the first time releases details of its top pilots' pay packets.

June 2: Commissioner of Labour Matthew Cheung Kin-chung meets pilots and urges Cathay to return to pay talks.

June 3: Cathay agrees to return to talks with pilots after a five-hour meeting with Mr Cheung.

June 4: Cathay reopens bookings on five Asian routes as pilots and management express hopes of deal.

June 5: A five-hour meeting between pilots and management fails to reach agreement. More talks are scheduled.

June 7: International pilot groups write to Hong Kong pilots' union to voice support.

June 9: No deal agreed despite 11 hours of talks between pilots and management. Cathay cancels 69 of its 113 scheduled flights but uses planes hired from other carriers to run 44 charter flights.

June 10: Deal reached after further seven hours of talks.
