A brothel keeper who ordered thugs to beat up a customer had his jail term increased yesterday for wasting court time by appealing against his conviction.

Chan King-chuen, 32, was led from the Court of Appeal with another three months added to his sentence by Mr Justices Gerald Nazareth, Michael Stuart-Moore and Arthur Leong Shiu-chung.

The judges dismissed Chan's argument that he was a scapegoat in the attack by four men on January 4 last year that left customer Sze Pun blind in one eye.

Chan was sentenced to 18 months' jail in February for wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Judge Stephen Geiser in the District Court ruled that Chan instigated the attack against the jobless man.

Mr Justice Nazareth ruled: 'Nothing that Chan has said in any way undermines the judge's finding. With the application being so devoid of merit, we think it right to disallow three months [already served by Chan] from counting towards the sentence.' None of the four who carried out the beating have been caught.

Mr Justice Nazareth said Mr Sze was much more believable than Chan in describing events at Lok Yuen Villa, Mongkok.
