Ample experience in working together helped three Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) students win the eighth Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) Hong Kong Scholastic Programming Contest.

It was the second time computer science and engineering students Kwok Chi-leong, 22, Starsky Wong Ho-yin, 20 and Justin Wan Yung-chun, 22, had taken part in the contest.

Their win has earned the trio a place in the ACM Far East regional programming contest.

'We have worked together before and understand each other very well. We think this gave us an advantage over the others,' Mr Wan said.

In the contest, each team which could comprise up to three members, was presented with a set of six questions and was required to solve them within three-and-a-half hours.

The winners were those who came up with the most efficient solutions in the shortest time.
