Social turbulence biggest concern

Local and returning secondary school students from overseas have expressed mixed feelings about life after Hong Kong's reunification with the mainland two years ago. Most were unhappy with Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa's performance and the turbulence over the past two years.

Quincy Li Chor-yi, a 17-year-old fifth former at St Teresa Secondary School, is disappointed with Mr Tung's track record.

'He is a bit slow, and he still has a lot to do,' Chor-yi added. 'The event that stands out is the right-of-abode issue. I am so scared about the flood of newcomers.

'We have more opportunities but at the same time we have increasing competition from those with higher academic qualifications,' she said. 'Many of my friends want to go abroad. They have lost confidence in Hong Kong.' Andy Wong Sai-chung, a third former at Cotton Spinners Association Prevocational School, was worried about rising unemployment.

'The economic downturn has been a great challenge. Now, good academic qualifications do not guarantee a job with good prospects,' he said.

'Our economy will depend less on services and more on information technology (IT). To enhance our competitiveness, we need to upgrade and learn IT skills,' he said.
