Why does ice turn white in the middle? Water is often called a universal solvent because almost anything will dissolve in it. Air is one of the things that will dissolve in water. When ice forms quickly, the dissolved air turns back into air bubbles.
That's why it's easy to crunch ice that is white. When ice freezes really slowly, there are no air bubbles and the ice is clear (and very hard).
What is nail polish made of? Nail polish is made of resin, usually one called 'nitrocellulose'. That's the main ingredient. Plasticisers help soften the resin. Then solvents, such as ethyl acetate, are added to help the polish dry. Pigments are combined to produce colours.
Why do you get a bruise when you are hit on the arm or leg, but if you are hit on your head, knee or elbow, you get a bump? Bumps and bruises both come from blood vessels that are broken when you are hit or injured. You can get either a bump or a bruise anywhere on your body, but you're more likely to notice a bump on a bony place, such as your elbow or head.
Your skin and underlying tissues are filled with tiny blood vessels called capillaries. If something hits you with enough force, the capillaries can break and leak blood into the surrounding tissues.
If the blood is close enough to the surface, you will see it as a bluish or purplish bruise. The leaked blood forms tiny clots in the tissue, and if enough blood has leaked, all those tiny clots together will feel like a hard lump.
Whether you get a bump or a bruise, or both, depends on how and where you were hit. A slight blow may break a few blood vessels near the surface of your skin, giving you an unsightly bruise without causing enough blood leakage to form a lump.
