THE number of hunger strikers protesting outside the Legislative Council building against the reinterpretation of the right of abode ruling fell to 21 yesterday as they entered the sixth day of the action.

Another protester was admitted to hospital. Lui Yuk-yam, 19, was told to pay $6,060, which would be much lower for a Hong Kong resident, for two nights at Queen Mary Hospital.

Her parents could not afford to pay and social workers had to intervene to get her released from the hospital. But they were unable to pay the bills, other protesters said.

Queen Mary Hospital would not comment.

Seventeen other hunger strikers chose to stay at the hospital's emergency room to avoid hospital fees and were discharged yesterday.

They then returned to the sit-in protest in the afternoon. The Parents' Association for the Right of Abode would soon join the sit-in to support their children's hunger strikes, it said.
