A government think-tank has proposed the creation of a US$1 billion project to stimulate growth in high technology.
The Commission for Innovation and Technology has recommended the establishment of a venture to be called 'Silicon Harbour' to Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa in its second and final report.
Details of the report, which will be made public today, include the names of several large international hi-tech companies that have expressed interest in participating in the project.
Speaking to Business Post, the chairman of the commission, Professor Tien Chang-lin, said the companies would include Intel, Sun Microsystems, Hewlett Packard and several Taiwanese companies. He declined to say whether computer manufacturer Acer and local property developers were involved but confirmed there would be Hong Kong investors.
Leading hi-tech US and Taiwanese companies are among members of a consortium that approached the commission for the establishment of the project.
Its focus would be on micro-electronic industrial innovation and development.
