SCM/BROOKS Telecommunications, a little-known US company, yesterday said it had formed a joint venture to ''design, build and operate'' a high-capacity digital network in Guangzhou.
The company said it would produce a prototype link in January 1994 costing US$20 million, and start rolling out a network costing US$1 billion in January 1995.
The network will be based on a technology known as broadband integrated services digital network (B-ISDN) - a technology that has not yet been fully implemented anywhere in the world.
The mainland partner, according to a news release, is Galaxy New Technology Co, described as ''a Chinese high-technology company''.
No further details of the partner or funding, or independent confirmation of the deal were available last night.
The US company is owned by SCM International, a Chicago-based merchant bank whose chairman is Mr Adlai Stevenson, a senior US politician.
