'Disney fung shui 'good' ' (South China Morning Post, July 3) may have left readers with the impression that the chimneys at Penny's Bay Power Station are, in some way, the stumbling block to the conclusion of a deal between the Government and Disney on the theme park project.
As far as we are aware, this is not so. Penny's Bay was the site chosen by the Government and Disney. Both will have been aware of the existing power station. CLP Power has been positive and pro-active with both Disney and the Government in addressing any issues that Disney may have with Penny's Bay Power Station.
We have had a number of discussions with the parties on issues arising from the proximity of our site to the proposed theme park. We have been asked to keep these discussions confidential. However, I can confirm that we have proposed to Disney a variety of solutions to reduce the visual impact of the Penny's Bay chimneys.
The article mentioned a suggestion from Dr Wong King-keung of the Town Planning Board that the Penny's Bay plant be switched to natural gas. This is one of the options under consideration which, on preliminary review, appears technically feasible and to offer environmental benefits. Such an option would require further technical and environmental studies as well as support from all concerned parties.
CLP Power recognises the importance of the Disney project to the community. While there may be a number of other obstacles to the Government concluding a deal with Disney, CLP Power has not been informed that the visual impact of the chimneys is, in any sense, a deal-breaker.
We would like to assure the people of Hong Kong that CLP Power will continue to work positively and co-operatively with Disney and the Government on the project.
