The diplomatic coup has cast a pall over a planned landmark visit to Taipei by Beijing's top negotiator on cross-strait affairs.
Beijing's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue yesterday reiterated Beijing's opposition to the link-up.
She did not say when the mainland would sever ties with Papua New Guinea.
'We believe that the Taiwan authorities are using financial difficulties in some countries to flagrantly engage in money diplomacy and split the motherland,' said Ms Zhang.
However, there was a sign that Beijing did not plan to postpone negotiator Wang Daohan's trip, scheduled for the autumn.
In a meeting with representatives from Taiwan's building industry in Beijing yesterday, Wang Zhaoguo, head of the Communist Party's United Front Department, described the autumn visit as 'firm'.
