South Tuen Mun Government School wins debate contest
The first joint Schools' English Debate Competition between Tuen Mun Government Secondary School (TMGSS), Tsuen Wan Government Secondary School (TWGSS) and South Tuen Mun Government Secondary School (STMGSS) was held early this month. In this newly established competition, STMGSS won the winner's cup.
The competition was divided into three sections. Round one between TWGSS and STMGSS was on the topic 'Genetic engineering should be used to solve the food crisis'. Round two between TMGSS and TWGSS had the topic 'The positive effects of surfing the Internet outweigh the negative ones'. And in round three between STMGSS and TMGSS the topic was 'It is irresponsible to take en dangered species, such as An An and Jia Jia, from their natural habitat and keep them in captivity'.
Wong Si-ling of STMGSS gave excellent moral arguments against genetic engineering to clinch the first round's best debater title. The audience admired the fluency and poise of Melanie Hau of TMGSS in round three. The highest individual marks, however, went to Ngai Chun-kit of TWGSS, whose analysis and polished performance gained him the best debater title in round two.
Finally, STMGSS won with 17 points more than TWGSS, which in turn was eight points ahead of TMGSS.
