More than 100 protesters marched from the Central Government Offices in Central to the Immigration Tower in Wan Chai in the morning.

But the crowd dispersed about 2pm when news spread about the first people being arrested.

Thirteen people were arrested and deported in vehicles provided by the Immigration Department.

The arrests came when they tried to verify their identities with officials.

All those arrested had entered the SAR illegally or had overstayed, the department said.

Ma Sze Heung-shun believed his son, Ma Tianzhu, 25, had been sent back after waiting for hours in vain for him outside Immigration Tower.
