The Government is conducting a survey of 5,000 companies with operations in 170 industrial buildings in Hong Kong as part of its review of potential changes to industrial areas.
The study, commissioned by the Planning Department, aims to update the demand for industrial land, given the significant changes to Hong Kong's manufacturing sector in recent years.
Developed industrial areas are facing possible redevelopment for commercial or residential uses, while the amount of new industrial land is expected to be reduced.
A government official said developers had been urged to speed up the conversion of industrial properties into residential sites as demand weakened for industrial land.
A call for the re-zoning of industrial areas near the former Kai Tak airport site would also be taken into account, he said.
Through the survey, the Government would like to gather opinions from industrial sectors to determine if there was a need to set up provisions for 'new trend industries', the official said.
Its review would also help the Government improve the planning of industrial areas to meet Hong Kong's need for high-technology development, he said.
