A gay group that wants to run information stalls at university orientation weeks next term has condemned prevailing homophobic attitudes.
Only two universities, Chinese University and City University, have allowed the Tongzhi Culture Society to display gay and lesbian literature at information stalls in August and September.
Franco Lai Yuen-ki, spokeswoman for Chinese University's Tongzhi Culture Society - the only homosexual group to be formally registered on a campus - said she was deeply disappointed with conservative attitudes prevailing in the student body.
Baptist University showed initial interest, but although not outrightly rejecting the gay group's application were 'unco-operative', she said.
Baptist University union internal secretary Joe Yiu Siu-man said: 'We will have to think about this . . . I want to see whether these books are suitable for the public.' Ms Lai said: 'They're afraid of what staff and other students might think.' Hong Kong University also refused the society's stall application, but because of a lack of space.
'I very much welcome the Tongzhi Society and I want to provide assistance. But during 'O' (orientation) week and registration of freshmen, space is very limited,' HKU student union president Chan King-chi said.
