In recognition of their hard work, some 450 teachers were presented with awards by Legislator Cheung Man-kwong at the fifth Parents Also Appreciate Teachers Drive ceremony, held at Academic Hall, Hong Kong Baptist University.

  The drive, first launched in 1995, was jointly organised by the Committee on Home-school Co-operation, the Education Department and Sing Tao Daily.

  It aimed to promote respect for teachers and to inspire parents to be good role models for their children.

 According to chairman Tik Chi-yuen, 900,000 cards of appreciation were sent by parents to their children's teachers. Teachers who received the greatest number of cards were presented with awards.

  This year, famous composer Chiu Tsang-hei was invited to write a song for the drive. The song, called To Teacher With Love, was performed by the Shun Lee Catholic Secondary School choir.

 There was also a song and dance performance with giant foam pencils and scissors by kindergarten pupils.

  Frederick Fong Chi-yeung, an English and geography teacher at La Salle College, received more than 70 cards from parents.

 'A mother told me that her child told her many things about school life, then I realised every word I say to students is very important,' Mr Fong said.

  Tracy Yum Yuk-ching, a teacher at PLK 1984 College, was excited to receive appreciation cards from parents. She said it was because she initiated many extra-curricular activities.

  'Some parents told me that their children didn't transfer to another school even though they got excellent academic results. I was so impressed,' Ms Yum said.

  Aileen Au Yueng-shan, who teaches English, art and geography at Holy Trinity College, enjoys her work very much.

  'As I am a class teacher as well, I received more than 30 cards from the whole class,' she said.

  She told Young Post that once when she was ill, a parent gave her a get-well card in person to show her concern.

  Wong Siu-keung, who teaches economics and mathematics at Tung Wa Group of Hospitals Chen Zao Men College, said that it was one of his teachers whom he admired who motivated him to become a teacher.

  He also recounted how a student had given him a handmade birthday card and some pencils and a rubber when Mr Wong had joked that it was his birthday.

  Mr Wong was especially touched because the student was from a poor family.

  Kwok Yin-kwan, who teaches disabled children at Sam Shui Natives Association Lau Pun Cheung School, said that it was not grades that mattered to her. A child gaining more confidence and starting to communicate with others was enough to make her feel that her job was worthwhile.

  Ms Kwok embarked on a career to teach these children because she thought that there was too much prejudice against them and too little concern for them. She hoped she could help improve their lives.
