Falun Gong followers yesterday received police permission for a protest by up to 1,000 members outside the Queen Elizabeth Stadium near Xinhua headquarters in Happy Valley on Sunday.
Organisers said preparations were being made to stage what they called an outdoor exercise after learning the go-ahead had been given.
'The exercise is to express our view about what is happening to our fellow Falun Gong members on the mainland,' spokesman Albert Kwok Yau-yan said.
'We prefer to call it an exercise rather than a protest, and it will be strictly voluntary.' The rally will be held between 9.30am and 2pm.
About 50 followers have been exercising every day outside the Queen Elizabeth Stadium since last Monday as a symbolic protest.
Mainland authorities outlawed the sect last week and arrested more than 100 key members in a nationwide crackdown as state-run media carried out a propaganda campaign to denounce sect founder Li Hongzhi.
