Former world champion Li Fai, who sensationally withdrew from Hong Kong's Asian Games squad in 1994 because she was pregnant, has launched a comeback for the fifth World Wushu Championships, pencilled in for November 3-7 at the Hong Kong Coliseum.

Li first rose to fame when she captured Hong Kong's only gold in the 1992 Asian Championships and eclipsed teammates Ng Siu-ching and Leung Yat-ho in the 1993 World Championships as she accounted for both gold medals - in cudgel and changquan.

When she looked set to lead the Hong Kong team to the Hiroshima Asian Games in 1994, Li pulled out because she was expecting a baby.

She has since kept a low profile and it was not until yesterday that her return became public knowledge, when head coach Yu Liguang revealed she had been training for the World Championships.

'She started training last year and returned from training in Beijing late last month,' Yu said yesterday.

Li, 29, who is due to compete in Sunday's Hong Kong Championships - a selection trial for the world event - could not be reached for comment last night.
