A rapist out on bail over his sex crime was chopped outside his home by a gang of men including his victim's husband, a court heard yesterday.

Sukhmander Singh, 28, told the Court of First Instance he was attacked by men wielding knives, a chopper and a bottle early on August 27 last year.

The alleged attack came just hours after the rape victim's husband went to meet Singh's relatives to warn them that a revenge attack was imminent, the court heard.

'[Sukhmander Singh] was charged with raping a female and granted bail in February,' prosecutor Paul Loughran told the Court of First Instance.

'When on bail, he was attacked by the husband of that woman. Then on August 26, the husband went to a cafe at Chungking Mansions, Tsim Sha Tsui, to talk with [Sukhmander Singh's] relatives.

'[He] threatened to chop the victim to death with a knife, with the help of other people.' Among them, it is alleged, was Manjit Singh, 19, and Gurdeep Singh, 24. Both men deny a charge of attempted murder and an alternative charge of wounding with intent.

Mr Loughran told the court that at about 3.30 the next morning, Sukhmander Singh was returning home from work when he was stopped in Shanghai Street, Mongkok, and attacked.
