Long voluminous wavy hair, which is sexy, wild, feminine and modern, is the new look for autumn and winter, says Calvin Chan, one of Hong Kong's top stylists. The look, as styled by Calvin on actress Kristy Yeung, is a big departure from this season's sleek, straight, flat tresses. But in case you can't grow your hair in time to achieve the new look, don't despair. Calvin says that with hair extensions, you can go from short to long in less than 15 minutes for between $500 and $1,500. Colour plays an important part in the look, and Calvin uses L'Oreal's latest range, Nuancelle. 'Five years ago no woman in Hong Kong would colour her hair to suit her mood. All the colouring jobs I did were to cover grey hair. Today, some women come in every month just to change their hair colour,' he says. Calvin says the colours for autumn and winter are burgundy and copper brown. 'In Kristy's case, I used a sharp colour like plum red for her highlights because it would bring out her fine, delicate features,' he says. But for Calvin - who has more than 17 years of experience and is part-owner of the private i salon - not all styling efforts have happy endings. 'Normally I am very careful with a client's hair but sometimes they don't get what they want and start to cry,' he says. In such cases, Calvin reassures them there's nothing that can't be fixed. 'Usually it is a small matter but if a client doesn't have confidence in themselves, then they tend to overreact.' So apart from skills with the scissors, Calvin also needs excellent public relations skills. 'Usually those who are hard to please have had a bad experience before. I try to build back their confidence,' he says.
