Fujiwara Kamui's comic book version of Journey to the West was one of the reasons youngsters turned up in droves to the Hong Kong Comic Festival last month.
Fujiwara started collecting and storing information for the comic book about 10 years ago and only recently finished illustrating it.
'I have an interest in Chinese literature,' says Fujiwara who felt privileged to work on Journey to the West, considered one of the four major works in Chinese literature.
Fujiwara drew his first comic about 18 years ago and has earned a cult-like status in his native Japan and Taiwan.
His illustrations are painstaking, as he tries to avoid using computers. 'If I used a computer, my books would be produced quicker but I prefer to do it by hand,' he says.
'Something done entirely by a computer doesn't have a soul.' Most of his comics books are treasured for their artistic merit.
