Kai Tak airport should be turned into a first-class fashion centre, according to a proposal to rejuvenate the textile industry.
Under the proposal by the Textile and Garment Industry Revitalisation Committee, a complex should be set up on the site to provide overseas buyers with a one-stop service.
Shops would be leased to local designers at a low rent to help young people join the industry.
A central data base, material warehouse and fashion factories would be built to attract overseas traders and designers.
The committee also suggested the Government introduce tax concessions for local enterprises to design their own labels. Every dollar an enterprise invested in developing brand names should produce a $2 concession, it said.
The panel called for a liaison centre under the Industry Department to help textile enterprises which had left Hong Kong to return.
