Young people from all over the world gathered in Hong Kong for a training camp which aimed to prepare them to be leaders in the 21st century.
The International Chinese Youth Leadership Academy '99 was organised by youth organisation Breakthrough.
One hundred young people from Hong Kong, the mainland, the United States, Canada, Britain, Taiwan and Macau participated in the event held at Breakthrough Youth Village.
At the opening ceremony, Leung Wing-tai, associate general secretary of Breakthrough, said that besides cultivating life- long learning skills, citizens in the next century would need to be multi-skilled workers able to build networks, develop their emotional intelligence.
They should also have a global outlook, spiritual wisdom, an ethical outlook and should learn more languages.
Understanding other cultures, daring to try and develop ing one's talents would also be important.
A variety of programmes were prepared for participants. 'City Pursuit' encouraged them to search for Hong Kong's own cultural identity while 'Future Not So Far Away' aimed to encourage them to think about the future, environmental protection issues, family, media and education.
