Customers at Festival Walk shopping centre in Kowloon Tong yesterday gave a low-key welcome to ParknShop's cut-price promotion.

Housewife Sham Ngar-kwan, 41, said: 'I didn't come here especially because of the price cut. I was passing by and needed to do my grocery shopping.

'I won't be buying too much just because of the sale. What's the point? My house is too small to store much,' she said.

'It's no good having cheap goods if they are no good. This is just a promotional gimmick. It would be different if something useful like electrical appliances were in the sale instead of things like water melons.' Cleaner Wong Lap-yee, 42, bought fresh fruit at ParknShop because of the price cut.

'I will buy a bit more than usual,' she said. 'I always go to ParknShop as their goods are often a few dollars cheaper than those at other supermarkets.' Teacher Peter Benzie, 45, who lives in Tsim Sha Tsui, was attracted to the Festival Walk store because of the variety of goods.

But he said the price cuts had no effect on his shopping habits as none of the goods he bought had been reduced - and carrying all the bargain products home would be too much of a problem.
