A love of music helped a St Paul's College student obtain an extra A, putting him on the list of 10A scorers in this year's Hong Kong Certificate of Education Examination (HKCEE).

 Science student Chan Wai-keung, 16, did not expect such excellent results.

  'I did not expect to score As in both Mathematics and Biology,' he said.

  Wai-keung obtained A(1)s in English Language, Economics, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and Additional Mathematics and A(2)s in Chinese Language, Religious Studies, Biology and Music.

  Under the school's policy, students can add either music or art to their HKCEE subjects.

  'I wanted to have 10As, so I took on an extra subject. I love music, so it was not a burden. I'm so happy that I succeeded,' Wai-keung said.

  The outstanding student is a quiet teenager and likes to listen to classical music and play the piano.

  'I did not have a regular study timetable, but I believed it was important to concentrate during lessons and study hard all the time,' said Wai-keung, who revised every day after school.

  Wai-keung hopes to be a medical student at university.

  'My family and friends are very supportive, especially my mother. She made my favourite dishes to cheer me up, and my friends encouraged me by sharing and studying together with me,' he said.

  Wai-keung was never under pressure because he took it easy.

  'A little pressure is needed to stimulate us to study and to keep us going, but we should not put too much pressure on ourselves,' he said.

  Wai-keung said youths should try to make more friends and improve their communication skills, which would give them an advantage when they enter society.

  Vice-principal Wong Kai- chuen was pleased.

  'The teachers were very happy when they heard about Wai- keung's results,' he said.

  'We believe our students had done their best.'   Mr Wong said students should not only focus on exam results. The most important thing was that they had done their best to achieve their goals.
