France has urged the mainland to lift a ban imposed on French wine last week because of concerns that blood infected with mad cow disease may have been used in processing it.

French Foreign Ministry deputy spokesman Francois Rivasseau said Paris had no such problems with any other trade partner.

'We are in constant contact with Chinese authorities . . . we hope that the blanket import ban they imposed on French wines will be lifted as soon as possible,' Mr Rivasseau said.

He said the potentially infected wines had not been put on the market.

France outlawed the practice of using a blood by-product to filter out impurities and sediments in 1997.

A handful of wineries in southern France were caught last month still using cow's blood but their wine has been seized.
