Two top students from St Joseph's College have something in common - they are good debaters and love to read.

 Thomas Chan Lut-ming and Alex Tsui To-shing, who scored nine As in the HKCEE,gained a lot from participating in study groups .

  Lut-ming is a member of the Chinese debating team, while To-shing is an excellent English orator.

   Lut-ming took nine subjects and obtained A(1)s in Chinese Language, Religious Studies, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics and A(2)s in English Language, Biology, Computer Studies and Additional Mathematics.

 The 16-year-old science student said:  'I only expected to get six As, so it is very surprising. I looked at my result slip several times to make sure I had got the right one,' he said.

 Lut-ming has equal ability in arts and science subjects. 'I love to read and study literature, and I like Chinese poems. I believe this can enrich life,' he said.

  Lut-ming's favourite subject is mathematics, but he hopes to study medicine at university.

 He has been taking part in debating competitions since Primary Six and believes this helped to enhance his self-confidence and communication skills.

 Lut- ming's team emerged as champions at an open debating competition last month.

  Classmate To-shing gained   A(1)s in English Language, Economics, Religious Studies, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Studies, A(2)s in Mathematics, Biology, Additional Mathematics and a C(6) in Chinese Language. But he was not there to receive the good news. To-shing is attending a physics course at Har vard University in the United States. So his father collected the slip instead.

   'When I received Alex's results, I was very tense like all the candidates. I have already phoned Alex to tell him the good news,' Mr Tsui said.

 To-shing plays a leading role in school activities.

 Mr Tsui said parents should encourage their children and try to understand them better by spending more time with them.

 'I believe communication with children is the responsibility of parents, especially when they are young,' he said.

  Lut-ming and To-shing were part of a study group formed to discuss academic-related problems. 'Even though we had our disagreements, the discussions proved very valuable and we learned a lot from each other,' Lut-ming said.

 The two high-achievers like to play basketball and chat with each other on the Internet.

 While Lut-ming celebrated with his family after the results were announced, To-shing will have his party after he returns to Hong Kong later this month.
