Sports grounds are large and advanced enough for the SAR to host Asian Games events, according to municipal councillors.

Only minor renovation and construction would be needed, including building temporary stands and bigger changing rooms, and providing additional lighting.

The Convention and Exhibition Centre could also be used for events such as table tennis and snooker, a Provisional Urban Council working group heard yesterday.

But an official said Hong Kong Stadium might not be 'grand enough' to stage the opening and closing ceremonies and a new venue was needed.

Councillors were discussing the plan by the Hong Kong Sports Federation and Olympic Committee to bid for the 2006 Asian Games.

The federation says Hong Kong has a more advanced communications system and better economic situation than Bangkok, which hosted the 1998 Games.
