Acting out the drama of young love

Zero Chan

Love is an eternal theme used by poets, novelists, lyricists, playwrights, composers and dramatists.

Pursuing that theme, Hong Kong 105 Drama Society has created a work about young love, called Romantic Memories.

The society is a group of amateur actors and dramatists.

Playwright Raymond Lau Chi- shing said: 'Where there are humans, there is love.

Why do people pursue love? Because love feeds our illusions and fantasies which humans find exciting.' The drama is made up of scenes of reality and fantasy. The first piece is about the Roman god Apollo, who fell in love when Cupid shot him with a divine arrow.

Another piece is about a girl's secret admiration for her teacher, which she records in a diary.

Actor Ken Chau Kam-lung said: 'Nowadays, youths get anything they desire, except love. Their parents spend all their time earning money, so youngsters have to find love elsewhere.' Actress June Lam Siu-ha said the media always encouraged the consumption of luxury goods, but it did not talk about relationships.

Lam said love's unpredictability was perhaps what attracted lovers.

Another actress, Vita Au Lai-tak, thought teenagers longed for lasting relationships. But they did not seem to care about lasting love, probably because there were so many divorces nowadays, which made them lose confidence in marriage.

Actor Edmond Kok Wai-ho said that to him, love was just like breakfast. If he had breakfast he would be satisfied, but he would not die if he did not have breakfast every day.

Teacher Ting Yat-chin said every generation had similar attitudes towards love. When people are young, they always look for excitement, but they will think about long-term relationships as they become more mature.

Understanding this, director Willy Wong Ka-chai said he hoped the drama could reflect the love lives of young people, arouse their interest, and warn them about being naive when they fall in love.

'I hope they will be more mature the next time they have to deal with their love affairs,' Wong said.

The drama will be staged between August 19 and 21 at La Cremeria, Fringe Club, 2 Lower Albert Road, South Block, Central, Hong Kong.
