Rare dolphins could be the victims of the Lantau reclamation project, an environmentalist warned yesterday.
Mr Lam said the most viable option to reclaim land for a proposed theme park in Penny's Bay was to use marine sand costing $10 a cubic metre from Zhuhai.
But with early industry estimates suggesting more than 9.2 million tonnes of sand will be needed, a green group leader feared that importing 'heavily polluted' mainland sand would harm the environment.
The chief executive of Green Power, Man Chi-sum, said the Pearl River Delta had seen increasing pollution in recent decades.
Heavy metals in the seabed could be imported to Hong Kong waters if marine sand was transported, he said.
'This is going to disrupt the peaceful marine life in Lantau and put at stake the whole ecology as the food chain would be greatly affected by the toxic substances,' Mr Man said.
