Television Broadcasts (TVB) may emerge as a contender for one of the new satellite broadcasting licences to be issued by the Government, according to analysts.
The Office of the Telecommunications Authority is taking proposals for the issue of an unlimited number of new satellite licences, as part of a plan to boost competition.
The licences are for direct-to-home (DTH) delivery of four satellite channels that could each transmit about 40 digital TV programmes.
Subscribers would use small satellite dishes, about 0.4 metres in diameter, to receive the signals.
TVB last year invested NT$547.4 million (about HK$131.97 million) in a satellite digital TV broadcasting service in Taiwan, including the direct-to-home platform.
The service is yet to be launched.
TVB would 'not rule out any intention to apply' for a licence, a company spokesman said.
