HONGKONG Olympians Chan Kin-ngai and Wong Wai-lap carried the territory to their first medal of the East Asian Games in Shanghai last night.

In the men's team badminton event, Hongkong needed to beat Macau in the first round to book a semi-final tie against top seeds China this morning - and guarantee themselves of at least a bronze medal.

And they made no mistake against Macau, winning 5-0 without dropping a game.

Chan and Wong, who both won two singles matches in Barcelona to reach the last 16 of the Olympic Games, set the tone for the evening with crushing victories.

Chan opened up with a 15-0, 15-4 win over Sam Kai-chong and Wong followed with a 15-2, 15-1 victory over Leong Pui-lin.

In the doubles, Chan Siu-kwong and Chow Kin-man beat Mak Weng-heng and Manuel Jose Rosa 15-8, 15-2 and Wong and Ng Pak-kum brushed aside Iek Weng-kai and Sam Kin-chong 15-7, 15-3.
