Artificial reefs are lowered into Yan Chau Tong Marine Park waters yesterday as part of the latest efforts to boost fish stocks. Concrete blocks and piles of boulders form part of the reef at Shau Kei Pai and Wu Yeung Chau Pai in the northeastern New Territories. Yesterday's deployment of the artificial reefs was designed to create fish habitats, and formed the first stage of a two-pronged programme which started in early July. The next stage will see artificial reefs established outside existing marine parks. Keith Wilson, a spokesman for the Agriculture and Fisheries Department, said artificial reefs outside marine parks would only succeed as long as fishing activities were effectively managed in the areas.
