SENIOR party and government officials in Guangdong must enforce the country's strict family planning policies or face being passed over for promotion, according to Guangdong Governor Mr Zhu Senlin.
Speaking at a provincial family planning conference, Mr Zhu warned that all responsible cadres must adopt resolute measures in implementing the one-child policy.
Cadres failing to do so would lose their chance of ''recommendation, grade points, promotion and job transfer'', he said.
According to the Governor, Guangdong has registered an increase in births but fewer sterilisation operations in the first quarter of this year.
''This shows we cannot afford to relax our family planning efforts any moment,'' Mr Zhu was quoted as saying by the official Nanfang Daily.
At the conference, Mr Zhu singled out families with more than one girl as the prime targets of the ''education'', and said provincial officials must try every possible means to prevent parents of such families further violating the one-child policy.
