Fifty young people took part in a cleanup at Mai Po Nature Reserve as part of a summer environmental campaign launched by Metro Broadcast.
The 'Young! Let's Make Things Better' programme aims to improve youths' quality of life and enhance their understanding of the environment.
According to a spokesman for the nature reserve, Mai Po is not only the habitat of more than 300 species of birds, but also comprises areas where shrimps and mangroves abound.
'This is a valuable opportunity for the youths to take responsibility for our environment, and let them know more about our nature,' Dr Young said. 'This programme will also help the development of Mai Po Nature Reserve's Ramsar Convention, which is very important to our environment.' Under the initiative, 12 sets of electrical items, including kettles, TVs, flat-irons, dehumidifyers and cookers, were presented to the Ramsar authorities.
The Ramsar Convention was launched in 1971 with the aim of saving the world's wetlands from pollution and other harmful effects that threaten their survival.
Mai Po Nature Reserve is the only wetland in Hong Kong and it provides food for humans as well as animals. It is also a 'resting place' for migrating birds from all over the world.
