THE CONTINENTAL Shop 2A, 2 Hoi Wan Street Quarry Bay Tel: 2563 2209 Open: Monday-Saturday 10.30am-10.30pm During weekday lunch times, there is always a crowd of people trying to get a peek at the takeaway counter, as would-be diners hope there's still enough of their favourite salad or sandwich when it is their time to order. The takeaway counter features lots of attractive, healthy-looking (and fairly expensive) salads, sandwiches and main courses, and almost as many calorific, tempting desserts. The vegetarian focaccia sandwich is moist and delicious, filled with grilled eggplant, peppers, squash and a thick slab of mozzarella on crusty but tender focaccia. Chicken salad in a baguette is also wonderful, but so big and overstuffed it is almost impossible to get your mouth around it. If your idea of a salad is frozen diced vegetables tossed in heaps of thick mayonnaise, you might not like the offerings here - Nicoise, Greek, and pumpkin salads are healthy and fresh-tasting. Much of the takeaway counter can be ordered to eat in the restaurant, which also has a regular menu. Vegetarian offerings are always a good bet. We love the eggplant patty served with hummus on a bed of mixed greens. Meat-eaters will like the flavourful lamb burger or the chicken and leek pie. If you are feeling virtuous, end with an austere piece of lemon poppyseed cake, but if you're in a sinful mood, the banoffi pie is a decadent alternative.
