A Government working group has recommended increasing the scope of the Supplementary Legal Aid Scheme, which is intended for those who do not qualify for the main legal aid system, but whose annual disposable income is less than $280,000.
The group proposes the income limit be raised to $400,000 to keep pace with inflation as there has been no adjustment since 1984.
The working group also suggested the scheme be expanded to include medical and dental negligence claims as well as those involving professional negligence by lawyers.
At present, this scheme applies only to employee compensation claims and personal injury cases.
