IT is not an aircraft's crash-landing that kills but failure to get out of the plane afterwards, safety experts said.

The comments follow last Sunday's China Airlines crash at Chek Lap Kok in which three people died.

Most people, who might have survived crashes, die after the plane has come to a stop - and not on impact, the experts said.

Heeding safety instructions before take-off and landing could mean the difference between life and death in the event of a crash, they say.

But passengers often had a poor attitude towards the safety tips and the demonstrations given to them because they thought it was common knowledge.

'A lot of frequent flyers especially are complacent. They'll bury their heads in a magazine and do not look at the video because they don't want to be seen as a non-frequent flyer,' said Grant Howard, chair of the Asia-Pacific Cabin Safety Working Group of the Australian Society of Air Safety Investigators.
