I WAS visiting Hongkong during April and although, as a university don I am no stranger to demonstrations, the carnival-like and happy demonstration by mentally handicapped people (in a park in Wong Tai Sin) exercising their rights as citizens, showing their place in society, was unique in my experience and it was a privilege to be part of it.
It was encouraging to see so many young people, students from Hongkong's institutions of higher education, showing their support of handicapped people.
This ''Movement Against Discrimination'', organised by students, is something of which Hongkong can be proud. Yes, it's a MAD world, but if the future of Hongkong is in the hands of young undergraduates such as these, there is nothing to worry about.
The noisy objectors were too few to be representative and can be dismissed.
