A quartet of celebrities kicked off - or rather rowed and peddled off - the Raleigh Biathlon Challenge to raise money to fund projects in developing countries.

Singer Lillian Ho Ka-lee, actress Wong Pui-ha and sports representatives Wan Shue-wah and Ho Kim-fai got into action for a demonstration on the rowing and cycling machines before handing over to teams from Hong Kong Baptist University Rowing Club, Civil Aid Services and four teenage volunteer groups.

The volunteers got a taste of what lay ahead of them as they stretched their muscles on the machines to raise money for conservation and community projects.

The Raleigh Biathlon Challenge was just one of a range of activities to raise funds for Operation Raleigh International Hong Kong. Operation Raleigh is a worldwide charity which offers youths aged between 17 and 25 the chance to work on community and conservation projects in developing countries.

The organisation aims to de velop young people by improving their self-confidence and teamwork through giving them the opportunity to carry out demanding projects.

Those who wanted to take part in the projects had to demonstrate aptitude and competence at an outdoor selection weekend.

This year, seven males and eight females from Hong Kong were picked to take part in Operation Raleigh projects.
