I have been receiving an e-mail newsletter to which I am certain I never subscribed. While the newsletter is not without merits, it often gets to me when I travel and as such is akin to junk mail.
I have tried more than 30 times to unsubscribe, with no luck. More recently, I managed to contact the publisher to tell him I would take legal action if the service was not stopped, but was only told my name was not on their database and they couldn't possibly unsubscribe someone who wasn't on their system.
He says they have checked every e-mail address I have against their database. The latest I heard is that it could be the fault of my Internet service provider . . . it has been suggested the mail is being sent to me because a subscriber to the service has an address only one character different from mine. Yet the 'from' line on the e-mail indicates it is coming directly from this company.
This is irritating and the legal option is tempting. Do you have any insights in this regard? Could these people be telling the truth, or am I being spammed? Is there anything else I can do to stop these e-mails? I use Eudora 4.0.
NAME AND ADDRESS SUPPLIED It is certainly an irritant getting e-mail you do not want, especially when travelling to countries where Internet access is expensive. There are plenty of mail services that make money sending information to you along with advertising and it is in their interest to ensure you get their mail, but the more legitimate services will stop if you make it clear you want to unsubscribe.
The publisher could be telling the truth. If his company is a legitimate news business, it would be in his best interests to accommodate you.
