The Equal Opportunities Commission is to study the impact of information technology on the disabled.
It will look at what kind of provisions were needed to allow people with disabilities to access new technology such as the Internet, said Frederick Tong Kin-sang, the commission's director on disability issues.
He said the commission had received a number of complaints on the use of the Internet, telecommunications and other touch-screen facilities.
He said the Disability Discrimination Ordinance did not have a section on technology, but would cover services such as video-phones and touch-screens.
'However, we would look at it as a general issue, rather than a formal inquiry. We may ask for assistance from experts, if necessary.
'New technology could have a significant effect on the livelihood and integration of people with disabilities in society,' he said.
