A Dragonair pilot who suffered injuries along with eight passengers when making an emergency landing at Kai Tak airport during a typhoon in 1994 has launched a legal action for damages.
Captain Al Hussain Ali Al Wahabi claims negligence by the manufacturers of the Airbus A320 plane or by the airline caused the incident on June 6, 1994.
He had made three aborted landing attempts, pulling out each time, before finally bringing the aircraft down.
Two tyres burst as the plane hit the main runway before skidding off and coming to rest on a parallel strip during high winds caused by Typhoon Russ.
Emergency slides were used to free the 141 passengers. Some passengers later said they had stared death in the face and praised the pilot and other crew members for the way they handled the terrifying situation.
The airport was closed for an hour and 12 flights disrupted as the plane, en route from Nanjing, circled while waiting for a safe moment to land.
In a High Court writ filed this week, the captain seeks damages for physical and psychological injuries he suffered as a result of the emergency landing.
